AGRICULTURE is America's largest industry and an important force in Pennsylvania's economy. The agricultural sciences encompass the production, processing, distribution, and marketing of food, feed, and fiber and the management of our natural resources. Support services for the industry range from banking and financial services to soil and forage testing and disease diagnosis. The tools for today's agricultural scientists and business managers include quantitative business analysis, biotechnology, computerized marketing, as well as integrated pest management and environmental resource management. Because agricultural industries increasingly interrelate with global markets, there is a demand for college graduates who analyze information, explore expanding opportunities, solve complex problems, and communicate across cultures. Not only are our students prepared in the science and technology of agriculture, but they also receive a broad education in communications, humanities, social sciences, business and international experiences as part of their college curriculum. Penn State has long been a leader in agricultural teaching and research, focusing on the basics of animal, plant, and food sciences, as well as economic, nutritional, and environmental aspects of agricultural and natural resource management. Our College offers comprehensive agricultural education in fulfilling traditional resident education for undergraduates and graduate students, in continuing education, with educational programs for adults and organizations through cooperative extension. Faculty members conduct basic and applied research in all phases of agriculture around the world.
