Landscape Contracting - Major

Landscape Contracting is a professional program involving the art and science of planning, constructing, and managing landscape spaces.

The program emphasizes the technical and creative skills that serve as the foundation of the profession. Students study plant materials, planting design, construction methods, plant maintenance, business management and accounting as well as graphics, computer-aided design, surveying, soils, turfgrass management, plant nutrition, and pest control.

Students may choose between Landscape Management and Landscape Design/Build options.
Students are encouraged to intern with an established design/build firm or related business to obtain on-the-job experience prior to completion of academic requirements.

Employment opportunities exist at many levels of the profession. Landscape management contractors and landscape design/build firms are constantly looking for middle- and upper-level management personnel to direct the broad-scale operations of the office. Regardless of the scale of operation, the individual with academic training in residential planning, planting design, construction, and maintenance will be well qualified for the profession.

In addition to the large design/build firms, graduates may also seek employment with nurseries and garden centers, as well as municipalities, parks, and arboreta.
