Region Bid to host National Meeting in 2011 - Karen
Vines
Many of
you are aware of the discussions in the Northeast Region of
ESP to submit a bid to host the national meeting in 2011.
Based input from the 2007 National Meeting evaluation it was
determined to try to have the meeting in New York. New York
is excited to be proceeding with the bid with the support
of the other chapters in the NE. 2011 will be the centennial
year for their extension service as well, so we'll be a part
of their birthday party. The dates they are looking at are
October 9-14, 2011. The two locations they are considering
are Saratoga Springs and Syracuse.
Cornell
will take care of on-line registration. Other chapters will
need to take responsibility for things such as the fundraiser
(auction - although NY has a very good auctioneer that could
be used); Speakers for general session (Program Chair); Decorations,
etc. although they really don't need to have these identified
prior to submitting the proposal. If there is something you
think Pennsylvania should consider taking let me know. The
possibilities are included in the handbook at http://www.espnational.org/handbook/2007/SectionL2007.pdf.
Note
from the President -
Karen Vines, 2008 Alpha Omicron President
I hope
you are enjoying the beginning of spring which symbolizes
opportunities for new approaches and growth for many of us.
To me, the quest for continual growth and developement is
one of the primary reasons for participation in professional
development organizations such as ESP. Through our networking
with others and acceptance of leadership roles we exercise
and strengthen our abilities and develop newfound talents.
During
our first board meeting of the season we developed our goals
for the year. I will try to chart our progress on accomplishing
these on the website. Check the quick links on our homepage
at http://www.cas.psu.edu/docs/casprof/esp/.
I won't review them all here, but want to mention a few of
these where we all need to be working. They are:
- Increase
membership 10% - Do you have a colleague who is not a member
of ESP? Visit with them about what the association means
to you. As you see newer educators reach their two year
birthday with the organization, encourage them to become
members as well.
- Increase
the number of award nominations - Watch as your colleagues
are carrying out programs this year and let them know if
you would like to submit a nomination for them. Nominations
won't be due until this fall, but it's not too early to
start thinking about our nominations of deserving colleagues.
Let me
know if you have progress on either of these items so we can
update our progress on the website. Also, if you have unique
ways of approaching these plan to submit a brief recommendation
for the fall newsletter.
I am pleased
to report that our goal of working through JCEP to showcase
awards and recognition programs was very well received. The
JCEP organizations plan to work together to plan a Showcase
of Excellence at the fall Annual Extension Conference and
Professional Improvement meetings.
As you
see ways ESP can better meet the needs of the membership,
please send me an email. We want to make this organization
the best it can be which requires that we all be involved.
Thank you!
