Presidents Message - Fred Davis, Alpha Omicron President

Eleven members of Alpha Omicron Chapter of ESP have just returned from the National ESP Conference in Charlestown, South Carolina where we spent a busy four days with other state representatives from around the nation. It was a rewarding time with lots of discussion, fun, and professional development opportunities. Especially rewarding was to see how many of our chapter members and retirees were involved in the planning and execution of the events and to see so many in leadership positions and recipients of National Awards.

I was proud to receive, as president of Alpha Omicron, recognition from the National President, the following awards for our chapter; The Platinum Certificate for the Chapter of Merit Award with one of the highest scores presented; The Northeast Region Achievement in Membership Award which was presented with a $25.00 gift certificate for merchandise from National; The Silver Chapter Certificate of Achievement in the Development Campaign with an average contribution of almost $48.00 per member; and the Certificate of Achievement for Member Participation in the campaign at 26.5%, again one of the highest in National.

Individual members fared equally well with four National awards being presented. Christy Bartley was a national winner in the Mid-career category, Dwane Miller received national Early Career recognition, the Diversity Team of Jan Scholl, Patreese Ingram, Gretl Collins and Howard Neurenberger represented the Northeast Region for the Team Award, and Tom Weber received the Richard Angus Scholarship for Professional Development.

I would also be remiss if I did not recognize the outstanding job that Nancy Crago did as Immediate Past National President. Nancy was well respected by her colleagues and received a book of well-wishes and pictures as a departing gesture from the National Board. Not to be outdone, Nancy Wallace performed admirably in her role as the Northeast Regional Vice President and Chair of the Member Services Committee.

Other National Board members from Pennsylvania include Duane Stevenson, Global Relations, Debra Gregory, Member Services, Fay Strickler, Member Recruitment and Retention, Karen Vines, Professional Development and Jeff Myers, Resource Development and Management. Also participating in the conference was Nancy Kadwill who presented a poster session, and Karen Vines who sate on a presentation panel about marketing ESP.

I hope that all of you are planning to attend our Annual Meeting/luncheon on October 19 so that you can congratulate this year's winners, and support our newly recognized state winners for submission to National in 2008.

ESP Annual Membership Dues Increase - Richard Stup, Alpha Omicron Chapter Treasurer

Funding is essential for any organization to operate effectively and ESP is no exception. I'm sure that most of you know that the majority of our operating budget is derived from your annual membership dues. What you might not know is that a large portion of your dues go to the National ESP organization. In past years your membership dues for renewing members was $50. We retained $20 here in the local chapter and forwarded $30 along to National to maintain your national membership.

Last year, National made the decision to increase their annual dues from $30 to $40 starting in FY 08. In order to maintain our annual local budget of $20.00 per member, we need to pass on the $10 National increase to your next year's total annual dues. The ESP Executive Board is proposing that our local chapter dues be increased to $60 for an annual membership renewal, and $40 for a new membership. Your Chapter leadership strives to be efficient with your ESP budget. This dues increase will bring no additional funds locally, it is only to meet the increased cost of national dues.

Membership Application & Dues Deadline - January 4, 2008

National ESP News

National ESP Endowment Campaign - Duane Stevenson, National Committee Chair

Many of you know that the National ESP Organization is working on raising funds for a $500,000 endowment to support Scholarships and ESP activities. So far approximately $340,000 has been raised from ESP members nationwide, which means there is still $160,000 to raise in donations. If you are interested in donating to the National ESP Endowment, bring your donation to the ESP meeting on October 19th or you can mail it to the National ESP organization or to our chapter treasurer. Help preserve the future activities and great benefits of our professional organization by making a donation to the endowment. For further information, contact Duane Stevenson by email at dls37@psu.edu or phone 610-746-1970, ext 2.

Endowment Committee Report - Duane Stevenson, Committee Chair

You can help!

The All Extension Conference is just around the corner and ESP will be one of the partner professsional organizations participating in the annual professional organizations auction to be held after the recognition banquet on the evening of October 18, 2007 at the Penn Stater Organization. This is the time of year that you can help your ESP chapter by bringing a item for ESP to the auction or buy an ESP sponsored auction item. The funds raised from the ESP portion of the auction are used for Scholarships and the National Endowment. If you are unable to attend the meeting or auction send your auction item with another ESP member. Hope to see you on the evening of October 18th to support your ESP organization. If you have any questions feel free to contact Duane Stevenson at 610-746-1970, ext 2 or by email to dls37@psu.edu.

Assistance Needed - Karen Vines, Vice-President, Alpha Omicron

I would like to develop a list of past recipients of our chapter awards. I have reviewed the minutes currently on the website, but these yield limited results. Please consult the lists (on the chapter awards page) and provide any additional information you might have regarding past recipients. Thanks!

Special Correspondence

This letter was submitted by Fred Davis on behalf of Alpha Omicron membership for inclusion in a book presented to member and outgoing Past President, Nancy Crago, at the National ESP Conference.

Dear Nancy:

The members of Alpha Omicron Chapter of Epsilon Sigma Phi are very proud to add this letter to your book of remembrances as you complete your final chapter in the leadership of the national organization. You have continued the great legacy of National Presidents from Pennsylvania including Patricia Powley and Fay Strickler, all of you exemplifying the goals and ideals of this great institution.

Nancy, you have been a diligent, focused and hardworking member of ESP from your work with our local chapter, through your Regional responsibilities, to the National Board and as National President. As a former Extension Regional Director, I personally have been grateful for your Presidential focus and emphasis on leadership development, a subject close to my heart.

Balancing an active family living program in Pittsburgh is difficult enough without the rigors of responsibility as a National Officer of Epsilon Sigma Phi. From my perspective, you handled both with patience, dignity, and professionalism, all at the same time, not an easy feat with the pressures we receive from all corners.

You have encouraged each and every one of us, especially those of us in a leadership capacity, to expand our horizons, work harder for the good of the entire organization, and to be proud of our accomplishments in ESP. It is truly and extension of the association in recognizing and rewarding service, education, and professionalism.

On behalf of all of Alpha Omicron's annual and retired members, congratulations and best wishes as you complete your work on the National Board and as Immediate Past President. We could not be more proud of you!

Sincerely,

Fred Davis
President, Alpha Omicron Chapter
