Annual Meeting
10/18/05

President Michelle Rodgers called the meeting to order at 5:35 PM.

Karen Thomas led everyone in Extension Professional Creed

Patricia Powley reported on Life Members Committee. The committee came up with a survey for life members. Bob Lewis & Nancy Crago reviewed it. The survey was sent to 86 retirees. Forty people replied and 4 are in attendance. The respondents suggested having a reception and made suggestions for Professional Development.
Also life members contributed $460 to the ESP endowment fund.

Dennis Murphy has been working on life member recognition. We have two new life members: Chuck Gale and Linda Youngwirth

Thanks to Karen Thomas for chairing annual meeting. She thanked the committee and Amy Gregor for making arrangements. The theme "Outreach Beyond Our Borders" was suggested to go along with the presentation.

"Where in the World is Guanajuato, Mexico?" was the presentation by Marilyn Corbin & Christy Bartley on the Extension Institution in Mexico. Penn State signed a five year agreement to establish a 4-H Youth Development program in Mexico.

They worked with the University of Guanajuato Institute of Agriculture to do this. Elected officials from there will visit Penn State in January 2006 to visit Farm Show, etc. They are still working on technology ties to there.

6:15 pm Dinner was served.

A personal reflection time was observed as members remembered victims of hurricane Katrina, the disaster in Pakistan, etc.

Meeting minutes - Jeff Myers.
Recognized Carla, the York County secretary, who helped with newsletters. It is critical to get current addresses for members and life members. Motion to accept minutes as read from Debbie Gregory. Second by Nancy Crago.

President's Report - Michelle Rodgers
She encouraged people to take leadership role in Epsilon Sigma Phi
The current officers set three major goals for this past year.

  1. Host one professional development activity - tomorrow's session "Park, Walk, Walk" was planned by the professional development committee and sponsored by ESP.
  2. Plan one life member activity. The survey they did was shared with the NE states. Networking opportunity tonight (reception) was that event. Historical committee has also been active.
  3. Improve recognition of members through the awards program. This year we doubled our participation in all three award areas and went from 8 to 18 applications in one year. Also 5 of 6 national committees have PA representation.

Nancy Crago is the incoming National President of Epsilon Sigma Phi.

Michelle received 3 boxes of stuff when she became president. Pat Powley went through boxes, archived it and reduced it to one box. The old records were sent to the Paterno Pattee library archives.

Officers will be attending national meeting.

We need to look at membership rules as hiring procedures change. Michelle thanked the committees and Daney for his support.

Sandy Hall - reported on Forgivable Loans & Alpha Omicron Scholarship.
Alpha Omicron Scholarship went to Marcia Weber who is pursuing a MS in Training and Development.
PA JCEP Scholarship went to Deno DeCiantis who is getting his PhD in Education Leadership

Rookie Award for less than 2 years Service went to Helen Kane
Early Career Award went to Richard Stup
Mid Career Award went to Martha Gregory
Team Award for the "Healthy Diabetes Plate"

Administrative Leadership Award was given to Michelle Rodgers

Martha Gregory presented the Extension Relations & Leadership Friend of Extension Award to Richard Crouse of Adams County

Staff Assistant Award was given to Linda Kulp
ESP International Service Recognition went to Leon Ressler

Michelle Rodgers gave out Special Recognition Awards for outstanding contribution to this organization. These went to: Patricia Powley, Guy Temple, and Nancy Crago.

PA Committee Reports
Audit & Finance - Dwane Miller
He audited books in February and found everything in good order. He gave thanks to Deb Bryant for her work. Books were transferred to Shirley Bixby after the audit. The 2005 books will be audited in December.

Constitution & By-laws - Debra Gregory
Copies were distributed. The version on the website is not current. Some changes as to how committees are listed.

Global Relations - Mary Alice Gettings
There will be a Professional Development opportunity in spring 2006.
Internationalize Extension - co-sponsored by office of international program. Will cover cultural competency, global trade, etc.

This will provide 5.5 hours of diversity training for educators and staff.

Professional Development - Mary Jo Nestlerode provided a written report.

Annual Meeting Committee - Karen Thomas announced that 76 members had pre-registered for this event.

ESP National Endowment
$460 was donated by Life Members
Silent auction tomorrow night. Money that is raised will go towards national endowment fund.

Web site - Peg Shuffstall
Could use new ideas for the web site.

Recognition on retirement - let Dennis Murphy know if you plan to retire.

Historical Committee - Guy Temple
His group is assembling "Extension Memories of the 20th. Century" They need stories such as your best day, worst day, etc. They have 125 - 150 stories right now. The committee consists of Tom King, Elton Tate, and Guy Temple.

Sympathy & Memorial - Andrea Bressler announced that 6 members were deceased since last year. They included Herb Anders, Roger Grout, Claire Keim, Albert K. Scala, Ray Reitz, Crystal Wackerman.

Member initiation - written report by Christy Bartley and Fay Strickler
New members include Nancy Stevenson, Peter Wolfhurst, Stacie Bird, Janice Stoudnaur, Mary Concklin, Deanna Behring, Jackie Bruce, Lisa Janosko.

Assets & Investments $25,774.17
Motion by Mary Alice Gettings to accept the Treasurer's Report as read. Second by Sandy Hall.

Budget Report
We had more members that anticipated, so balance was higher than budgeted. Motion to accept 2006 budget by Deno DeCiantis. Second by Brenda Bernatowitz

$3,000.00 Certificate of Deposit matures soon. Fred Davis made a motion to give all or some of this amount to the National Endowment. Second by Patrice Ingram.

Our chapter has not contributed as a group. Phyllis Wright asked to be done in honor or our outgoing National President Fay Strickler and incoming President Nancy Crago.

Discussion:
Joan Thomson amendment - That $1,500.00 be donated now in honor of Fay Strickler and $1,500.00 used for Nancy Crago to use it toward purchase of the key.

Bob Lewis amendment - to honor all of our past national officers.

The first vote was that the amount will be split. The motion carried.

The second vote was that the first amount be donated to the National Endowment to honor past national officers and the second half of the donation to be used toward key. Motion carried.

New Business:

Nancy Crago - Currently Vice President of National ESP. They are gearing up for annual session in Colorado. The session will include concurrent sessions and poster sessions.

They offer reduced registration fees for life members and offer life member "track" at the national meeting. New leadership training for chapter officers is being offered, will be web-based also. In response to request for more professional development opportunities - offer list of seminars, "Reflections on Extension Leadership" with a series of panel members.

National Conference dates are moving to mid week for next year. In 2006 the annual session will be in Annapolis MD, November 14-17. JCEP will also be during week.

Mary Ann Gettings needs people to write 300 word articles for national publication.
ESP national website "go Global" button - lists opportunities for educators.

Duane Stevenson - Resource Development. Submitted a written report.

Nancy Wallace - Member Services
Many opportunities for members - grants, etc.
National ESP gives scholarship for first time attendance at PILD.

Public Issues - Mary Jo Nestlerode
This committee plans PILD conference in Washington DC.
