Award Descriptions:

Distinguished Service Recognition

  • Certificate
  • One recognition per 150 chapter members each year. Must be a current ESP member.
  • Criteria: Nominee must have contributed significantly to state extension program planning and delivery for over 20 years.
  • Nomination Process: Nomination must be made by an ESP member. Submit a letter of recommendation no longer than 2 pages and at least 12 pt. font size, highlighting why the candidate merits this award.
  • Deadline: September 1, 2008
  • Presented: Annual ESP Meeting - Presented at the joint session if time permits.
  • PA Committee Responsible: Chapter and Career Awards

Friend of Extension Recognition

  • Certificate
  • Up to three recognitions per state each year
  • Criteria: Nominees must have given outstanding public service and support to extension programs
  • Nomination process: Nominations can only be made by an ESP members. Submit a letter of recommendation, no longer than 2 pages and at least 12 pt font size, highlighting why the candidate merits this award.
  • Deadline: TBA

Administrative Leadership

  • Certificate
  • One recognition per 150 chapter members each year. Must be a current ESP member.
  • Criteria: Nominee must have shown noteworthy administrative performance during 10 or more years of county, regional, state, program, department or national leadership.

Mid-Career Service Recognition

  • Certificate
  • One recognition per 150 chapter members each year. Must be a current ESP member.
  • Criteria: Nominee must make significant contribution to extension programs in work area in 10-20 years.

Diversity Recognition

  • Certificates
  • Award up to one team and one ESP member per chapter each year. Team nominations should include all staff that had a primary role in planning, developing, implementing and evaluating the initiative. 50% of the team members must be current ESP members. The diversity initiative must have been implemented in the past 3 years.
  • Criteria: This award recognizes outstanding efforts and accomplishments in developing, achieving and sustaining diversity in Extension programs and/or audiences. Diversity is defined as acknowledging, understanding, valuing and celebrating differences among people relateive to race, color, creed, religion, national origin, gender, age, marital status, disability, public assistance status, veteran status or sexual orientation. (List is not all-inclusive.) Nominations will be evaluated on the following:
    • Program initiative addresses significant diversity issues in relation to current state and national initiatives over multi-year span.
    • Program makes innovative efforts to attract and reach diverse and/or targeted audiences.
    • Demonstrates collaborative efforts.
    • Utilizes creative and unique strategies to market or publicize the program to reach diverse and/or targeted audiences.
    • Makes efforts above and beyond affirmative action program requirements.
    • Demonstrates potential for replication by others.
  • Submit written application. Points will be awarded as follows: Program description using criteria (60 points), Accomplishments/Evaluation (25 points), Future implications (15 points)

Continued Excellence Recognition

  • Certificate
  • One recognition per 150 chapter members each year. Must be a current ESP member.
  • Criteria: Nominee must show continued leadership initiative and excellence in program or administration on state/regional/national level. Member is eligible for nomination five years after receiving chapter DSA.
  • No deadline. Send names to National Office as recipients are selected.
  • Presented: Annual ESP Meeting

Meritorious Support Service Recognition

  • Certificate
  • Unlimited recognitions per chapter
  • Criteria: For support staff who have demonstrated excellence to support extension programs - not necessarily a member of ESP.

Retiree Service Recognition

  • Certificate
  • One recognition per chapter per year
  • Submit nomination form to committee chair according to state deadline.
  • Criteria: Each chapter develops their own criteria recognizing retiree's continuing contributions and outstanding service.

Tenure Recognition

  • Certificate
  • As many members per state as reach 25 year tenure level
  • Criteria: Nominee recognition is based on actual years of service in Cooperative Extension work.

Visionary Leadership Recognition

  • Certificate
  • One recognition per chapter per year
  • Criteria: Nominee must have provided significant accomplishments resulting in leading extension forward in new directions.

Retirement Recognition

  • Unlimited. Recipients must be current members of ESP
  • Criteria: Given to members to recognize the event of their retirement from extension. Paid-up life membership is encouraged but not required.
  • Deadline. October 1, 2008 for members retiring between November 1, 2007 and October 31, 2008.

Extension Staff Assistant

  • One recognition per chapter per year
  • Criteria: Nominee must be a full-time staff assistant in a county, regional or state office in Cooperative Extension. Nominations evaluated on:
    • Length of service
    • Initiative, responsibility and quality of work
    • Attitude toward clientele and others who telephone or visit offices
    • Extracurricular activities relating to extension programs above and beyond the call of duty
    • Knowledge of extension's goals, activities and procedures
    • Cooperation with co-workers
    • In-service training for self-improvement
    • Activities that have enhanced extension's goals and objectives
    • Supervisory activities and training of new staff
    • Number of staff assistants or wage payroll positions available to handle work load normally associated with the extension office
  • Nomination Process: Nominations can only be made by an ESP members. Staff assistants who are employed full-time in a county, regional, or state office of Cooperative Extension in Pennsylvania are eligible for consideration. Submit a letter of recommendation no longer than 2 pages at 12 pt font size, highlighting why the staff assistant merits this award.
  • Deadline: September 1, 2008

Rookie Award

  • One recognition per chapter per year
  • Criteria: Nominee will not be a member of Epsilon Sigma Phi. This award recognizes an individual with less than two years of service. Any county or state Extension educatior who has been employed since July 1 of the previous year is eligible for the award in the current year. Selection is based upon program activities planned and implemented by the individual since joining Cooperative Extension.
  • Nomination Process: Submit nomination form.

Keystone Award

  • Inaugural award 2003.
  • Recognizes a member of Epsilon Sigma Phi with 20 or more years of Extension service for Extension accomplishments, program impact and leadership in the state. Data supporting measurable impacts of the candidate's work in meeting needs of clientele will strengthen the nomination.
  • Nomination Process: Submit nomination form.
  • Deadline: September 1, 2008
