GENERAL

The purpose of this site is to summarize graduate degree requirements, recommendations, and policies to guide graduate students, faculty, and staff in the entomology program. Included is a Graduate Program Progress Ledger which serves as a check list on which the completion of requirements is recorded. Complete statements of the Graduate School requirements are found in the Graduate Degree Programs Bulletin and the Thesis Guide . Information about faculty and staff is available in our personnel pages. Information about routine administrative procedures is available from staff in the main departmental Administrative Office (501 Agricultural Sciences and Industries Building). It is hoped that this information will help make your stay at Penn State a pleasant one.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

To qualify for admission, an applicant must have a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution and a minimum grade point average of 3.0 (B), on a 4.0 scale, for the last two undergraduate years. Prospective students must submit an application, two sets of transcripts, GRE scores (general), TOEFL score (if applicable), a letter of intent, and a minimum of three letters of recommendation. Prospective students must apply on-line through our departmental web site. The student should have a strong background in biological sciences. Courses in chemistry through organic, physics, mathematics through calculus, statistics, and computer applications are recommended. For applicants whose native language is other than English, verbal communication with a faculty member is required so that the faculty member can assess verbal skills.

Provisional admission is possible, with deficiencies to be completed prior to final acceptance into the program. Courses considered as deficiencies will not count toward meeting the requirements for a graduate degree. Deficiencies will be determined by a departmental committee consisting of the Graduate Program Council (GPC), the Department Head, and a temporary advisor to be assigned at the time of admission. It is recommended that students not receive all undergraduate and graduate degrees from Penn State.

Core Course Waivers

Determination of waiver will be based on a written exam equivalent to the final exam and will be administered by the instructor(s) of the course(s) involved. In cases where waivers are granted, doctoral students will be held accountable for the knowledge at the time of the candidacy and comprehensive exams. Students in interdisciplinary programs supported by non-departmental funds are not required to take entomology core courses.
