Animal Biosecurity
In the context of animal agriculture, biosecurity is the series of management steps taken to prevent the introduction of infectious agents into a herd or flock.
Anthrax is an infectious disease caused by a spore-forming bacterium called as Bacillus anthracis. ANTHRAX IS A ZOONOTIC DISEASE (a disease shared between animals and humans). In humans, anthrax is rarely reported. Untreated anthrax is often fatal, especially the respiratory type of anthrax infection.

Avian Influenza

Type A influenza viruses can infect several animal species, including birds, pigs, horses, seals and whales. Influenza viruses that infect birds are called “avian influenza viruses.”
Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE)
Bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), also termed "Mad Cow Disease", is one of a number of slowly progressive, degenerative neurologic diseases in animals and man classified as Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathies (TSE).
CWD has been detected in wild and captive herds of deer, elk and mule deer in several western states, Wisconsin and Canada. It is a progressive and always fatal disease of the nervous system afflicting wild and captive cervids. Scientists theorize that CWD is caused by an unknown agent capable of transforming normal brain proteins into an abnormal form.
Exotic Newcastle Disease (END)
Exotic Newcastle disease (END) is a contagious and fatal viral disease affecting all species of birds.
Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD)
Foot-and-mouth disease is one of the most highly contagious animal diseases known. It is caused by a virus that can infect cattle, swine, sheep, goats, other cloven-hooved animals, elephants, hedgehogs, rats, and mice. Infections in humans are extremely rare and non-fatal when they occur.
Lyme Disease
Lyme Disease is an infection caused by Borrelia burgdorferi, a member of the family of corkscrew-shaped bacteria known as spirochetes and is transmitted by ticks.
Johne's Disease
Johne's disease, pronounced YO-knees, is a contagious bacterial disease of the intestinal tract. Johne's disease occurs in a wide variety of animals, but most often in ruminants.
Vesicular stomatitis is a viral disease that primarily affects cattle, horses, and swine. The virus that causes vesicular stomatitis has a wide host range. This disease also occasionally affects sheep and goats. Many species of wild animals, including deer, bobcats, goats, raccoons, and monkeys, have been found to be susceptible hosts. Humans can also become infected with vesicular stomatitis when handling affected animals.
West Nile Virus
Infected mosquitoes transmit the West Nile virus. These mosquitoes usually bite and infect wild birds -- the primary host of the virus -- but can also infect horses and other mammals, in addition to humans.
