7. From the desk of the alternative and renewable energy program leader

In October, I agreed to assume a part-time (50 percent) position as the Program Leader for Alternative and Renewable Energy in the college. This is an area where our college has considerable expertise and there is significant interest by our clientele in seeking some science based answers to complex questions. Also, there seems to be considerable need for programming in this area in the future, with the continuing projected increased in crude oil prices and the impending deregulation of electricity in our state.

9. The future of agriculture

Ron Cashdollar is a Bedford County farmer with an eye to the future and a worry that little pieces of the farm business are being lost every season. For example, he points out that a man who, for years, milled tractor heads closed his doors because he couldn’t find anyone to take over the business. Now an entire community of farmers must travel longer distances to get the work done. Locally, he says, two business parks boast everything from factories to distribution centers. But they contain nothing that relates to the farm.

Mr. Phillips states, “Investing in our youth, through these proven programs, yields long-term results that preclude a life of crime and save our state millions in adult incarceration costs.” Each of the 15 funded programs is a new initiative for the grantee’s community and was selected to address the unique needs of each area. The programs will be implemented over a four-year period.

13. Access eBusiness/digital divide

Go ahead. Just offer an e-commerce course to the owner of a small, nascent business. Odds are that you’ll get a courteous excuse why he won’t enroll.
